Biography
Ede Telcs was born in 1872 in Baja. From his age of adolescence he was planning to be painter. After the secondary school he was a sculptor apprentice next to Kálmán Maássz (who was salesman on a tombstone estate) in Budapest. In parallel, he attended the drawing school of Francis Vasadi. From 1988 he continued his studies in the studio of Edmund von Hoffmann in Vienna, who discovered his talent and admitted him to the Academy. Later he studied at the master school of Gaspar Clemens von Zumbusch. He had already won the 300 forints award at the first year with his mythological sculpture group. Afterward with this same statue he participated on the international exhibition of Vienna in 1893 and also in Antwerpen, where he got silver medal for it. With this work he debut on the annual exhibition of the Hungarian Society of Artists in 1893/94 in Budapest.
His most successful works are the ‘Kossuth-statue’, which is set at Kecskemét, and with Ede Kallós jointly produced ‘Vörösmarty-statue’ in Budapest, nd the Dezső Szilágyi memorial. He is also famous for the statue of Ignác Alpár in the city park, and the St. Ladislaus and III. Károly statues as part of the Millennium Memorial.
During his artistic career he received several national and international recognitions. Some of his works can be found in the Hungarian National Gallery. He had memorial exhibition in there in 1963.
