Description
In the artworks by Róbert Csikszentmihályi from the eighties are stylized, unique, towering, so-called idol sculptures made of limestone or marble. The master later made bronze versions of these sculptures. The Machine Man is also one of this type, what is a tall statue torso. He's red bronze "clothing" stripped it half-naked, thus revealing the material and what lies behind it: under the bronze, the gears of mechanical structures "pulsate", which breathe life into the sculpture of Róbert Csikszentmihályi. However, this Machine Man is not human, he is more like an idol, he embodies an idea. In his dissertation entitled Flow, the artist expresses his thoughts on the importance of the experience of flow in human life, the acquisition of which was facilitated by culture or religion. Both are capable of "ordering" the consciousness, and the person submits to their expectations, as if they were part of a machine, a "machine man". Perhaps the figure of our rabbit standing in front of the dark background of the Mediterranean-style garden gives shape to this idea. Csikszentihályi created his archaic sculpture using traditional bronze material, using traditional techniques, as his great predecessors: Béni Ferenczy, Ferenc Medgyessy and Miklós Borsos. It was only after his professional success that the artist was able to reach for nobler materials, marble or bronze, which is how he was later able to create a figurative bronze version of the Machine Man, which also bears the stylistic features of abstraction and expressiveness. Art historian Edit Sasvári summarizes the artist's complex and multifaceted work as follows: "At the beginning of his career, he was connected to the figurative traditions of Hungarian sculpture, primarily to the work of Miklós Borsos and Ferenc Medgyessy. In his themes, he analyzes the relationship between man and nature, and his sculptures are basically the possibilities that unfold in the interaction of matter and thematics: the one that exploits the properties of the material to the fullest extent; at the same time, it is characterized by an organic approach that preserves faithfulness."
