Description

It is 1920, when Basilides Barna joined the graphic arts department of the Royal Hungarian School of Applied Arts (today's MOME). His stay there was short-lived, from 1921 he studied at the College of Fine Arts where his masters were István Bosznay and Gyula Rudnay. After his studies, he went on study trips to Italy, visiting Vienna and Paris too.

He was very popular artist of the 30s and 40s. In his painting periods - as can be read about - we do not find clearly distinguishable eras. He created a cartoony, fairytale-like style world, which he preserved until the end of his life. Known for his landscapes, Basilides was influenced by the neoclassical trend of the novecento.

The "Balatonalmádi with Öreghegy" comes from the time when his art was not yet relegated to the background. The hills behind the town located in the northeastern bay offer a magnificent view of Lake Balaton. Basilides Barna was also enchanted by the place, especially by the sight of the lake. He visited the nearby settlement of Öreghegy and painted Almádi and the bay of Balaton from there. He uses soft pastel colors in his airy composition with classic lines.

He chose one of the most beautiful locations on the northern coast to capture the typical Balaton landscape and atmosphere. His work is a landscape depictions, but it is excellent for that: it is understatedly elegant.
