Karoly Jakobey Feasting
Description
The academic style of the painter Károly Jakobey, depicting an ancient revelry, depicts a lively scene, an event that was almost commonplace among the nobles in ancient Rome. Citizens living a luxurious lifestyle often staged large revelations that could last for several days. The richly laid table, the bowls loaded with fruit and the wine jug also symbolize wealth, fertility and intoxication. The hedonistic revelation proclaims the enjoyment of life: the women in casual dress with a rich figure, the men embracing them, or the snackers sitting at the table are the epitome of the Carpe Diem (enjoy your time) in Croatia.
The artist created his work with the bravura technique of watercolor, which testifies to certain drawing skills and brushwork. The moving image follows the patterns of academic painting. The figures and drapery are sculptural, the colors saturated with brown. The image from this creates the effect of a fresco and, despite its secular theme, evokes church painting. At the same time, the classicist balance and harmonious composition make it a quality work.
