Amerigo Tot Last supper

Amerigo Tot: Last supper
Hungarian private collection

Description

Amerigo Tot spent most of his life in Italy, he was and stayed very popular during his life and also after his death. He was admitted to the graphic arts department of the Model Drawing School (now known as the College of Applied Arts), where he graduated with honors and his masters were: Ferenc Helbing, Gyula Kaesz and György Leszkovszky. His first significant artwork was a frieze for a railway station Roma Termini. He also created graphics, charcoal drawings and monotypes, but he is primarily significant as a sculptor. The main interesting of his bronze sculpture "After the Last Supper" comes from its title. In the peculiar way of representation, the last Passover meal Jesus and his twelve apostles having already finished. On the artwork shows an empty table left behind after dinner and the chairs standing around it in a circle. Tot's favorite motifs the human figures in pairs or in groups are absent, only the cloaks draped over the backless seats testify to human presence. Despite the human absence, we feel the artwork complete, without figures it reproduces the atmosphere of the scene and at the same time anticipates what will follow. Amerigo Tot's artwork has silky surface, but rustically simplified, it was one of the last sculpture by the master and stands out for its strong thought.
