Reich, Károly Loving couple I.
Description
We see a sitting young couple on a meadow. The slim girl - her eyes half way down and right knee bended – is sitting opposite to her admirer. Her sight is on the man’s shoulder. From her pinned-up hair bun a long stemmed wreath is hanging down.
She is wearing a light, translucent summer dress, which is letting us to see her feminine shape. She is spinning a wreath for her darling, who is sitting opposite to her and his Grecian face edge is visible. His unclothed top body is athletic muscled.
The inspiration of „Loving couple I.” drawing by Károly Reich graphic artist were characters of the Greek mythology: the classical beauty with wreath in her hair evokes the figure of Aphrodite, who represented the female ideal in the antique Greek culture.
The costume seems like “khiton” (a piece of ancient Greek dress) and the naked man’s body reminds us of the Greek idyll.
The beauty of the girl’s sweetheart matches with Apollo’s beauty from the mythology. His curly, tressy hair, fashionable and smooth shaved chin embodies the man’s ideal of the era and the platonic beauty.
The scene is intimate and the harmony with the nature transmits the ideal of love.
The artwork of the fine master of the Hungarian drawing characterizes the flexible and easy line leading. “Loving couple I.“ artwork is pervaded by archaic pureness and the lyrical joviality.
Károly Reich was keen on the Greek culture and his creation shows the love of human being and the humanism.
The composition is balanced and the silhouettes of the figures are drawn with one line and steady hand.
The peculiar criterion of the artist is this kind of line leading and the clear-out drawing with few tools usage (ballpoint pen, paper).
