Biography
János Mattis-Teutsch, painter was born in 1884 in Brasov. From 1901 for a year he studied at the School of Industrial Design in Budapest. In 1902 he admitted to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he was student until 1905. From 1906 till 1908 he made study trip in Paris. From 1909 he worked as statuette and art history teacher at the Brasov Industrial School.
He was a great master of avant-garde art, expressionism, constructivism and abstract art as well. From 1918 he became a member of the group “Abstrakte Gruppe der Sturm” in Berlin. In 1919 he contacted with the circle of Weimar Bauhaus. Not much later, he also worked as a creative collaborator at the Contimporanul avant-garde journal in Bucharest. Between 1928 and 1931 he worked at the artist colony of Baia Mare. Between 1944 and 1949, than 1957 and 1959 he was the leader of the artists group in Brasov.
