Biography
Márton Takáts, painter and graphic, was born on the 22nd of June in 1971 in Budapest. Between 1990 and 1995 he attended the Hungarian School of Fine Arts, for graphical arts. From 1995 to1996 he studied at the Hungarian University for Applied Arts, with Róbert König as his teacher.
Takáts's consciousness of tradition is visible in his artworks. His etchings and paintings are done meticulously and with a refined, extremely precise technique, but are still full of wit and irony. In his images full of fantasy, reality and imagination, past, present and future, timelessness and epochs are all intermingled. At the same time, this atmosphere of seriousness is broken by an air of playfulness.
His depictions mostly focus on cityscapes. Budapest and Parisian coffeehouses hold a special status in Takáts's art. The everyday street scenes and underpasses seem to be so imaginary, as if they did not belong to this world.
The artist’s main artwork so far, the series inspired by Piranesi, required more than an decade (1994-2005) of intensive work. His paintings - exhibited in our gallery in 2018 - make the artist's very personal, visionary thoughts about his hometown visible and perceptible to the spectator. He does not only share his opinion about art, but also about our culture and living circumstances. As a wanderer from the past, who is roaming through the ruins of the city, he shows us images, buildings of transience, coffeehouses, or pub enteriors. The figures between the houses are voyagers and wanderers who are still able to perceive the nearly gone memories with astonishment. It becomes obvious that we, in fact, could be any of those figures.
Those who live in or have travelled to Budapest, will easily recognize the sights of the city on Takáts's artworks.
